Contrast ratio

Contrast ratio is a numerical measure of luminance difference between foreground and background colors, expressed as X:1. WCAG calculates it from relative luminance values.

Why it matters

Text below 4.5:1 fails WCAG AA for body copy. Low contrast slows everyone and excludes low-vision readers. On dark backgrounds, maximum contrast can cause halation — contrast has both a floor and a practical ceiling.
